Kidney Scintigraphy
Aim of the investigation: Functional testing and imaging of the kidneys
Indications:
- Determination of the position, size and function
- In the case of suspected kidney abnormalities, e.g. double kidneys
- Clarification of urinary drainage disorders
- Inflammatory kidney processes
- Functional testing before and after chemotherapy
- High blood pressure in case of suspected renal artery stenosis
Preparation for the examination: 30 minutes before the examination, approx. 10ml/kg body weight of fluid should be drunk
Procedure of the examination:
- Doctor's consultation to explain any uncertainties regarding the examination
- Injection of the radiopharmaceutical
- Preparation of the images
- 2 blood samples during the scans and, if necessary, administration of Lasix (diuretic)
- Debriefing
- Assignment of findings to the requesting doctor as soon as possible in written form
Special features:
- if renal artery stenosis is suspected, ACE inhibitors must be discontinued 3 days before the examination
- if renal artery stenosis is suspected, the examination can be repeated after administration of captopril (antihypertensive drug)
Radiopharmaceutical used: Tc-99m MAG3
