Esophageal Scintigraphy

Aim of the investigation:

 

  • Assessment of transport disorders of the esophagus
  • Assessment of cardia function (stomach entrance)

 

Indications:

 

  • Esophageal stricture
  • Achalasia
  • Scleroderma
  • Esophageal spasm
  • Gastroesophageal reflux
  • Swallowing problems

 

Preparation for the examination::

  • You must arrive in a fasted state.
  • You must bring a drink (no water) and a porridge (apple sauce, mashed potatoes) of a homogeneous consistency (“no chunks”)

Procedure of the examination:

  • Bring a drink (not water) and a porridge (apple sauce, mashed potato) with a homogeneous consistency (“no chunks”)
  • “Test swallow” with water to practice swallowing on instruction
  • Intake of radiopharmaceutical into the mouth
  • Swallow on command (1. liquid form; 2. solid form) and make recordings.
  • Debriefing
  • Findings are sent to the requesting doctor in writing as soon as possible.

Radiopharmaceutical used: Tc-99m DTPA
