Esophageal Scintigraphy
Aim of the investigation:
- Assessment of transport disorders of the esophagus
- Assessment of cardia function (stomach entrance)
Indications:
- Esophageal stricture
- Achalasia
- Scleroderma
- Esophageal spasm
- Gastroesophageal reflux
- Swallowing problems
Preparation for the examination::
- You must arrive in a fasted state.
- You must bring a drink (no water) and a porridge (apple sauce, mashed potatoes) of a homogeneous consistency (“no chunks”)
Procedure of the examination:
- Bring a drink (not water) and a porridge (apple sauce, mashed potato) with a homogeneous consistency (“no chunks”)
- “Test swallow” with water to practice swallowing on instruction
- Intake of radiopharmaceutical into the mouth
- Swallow on command (1. liquid form; 2. solid form) and make recordings.
- Debriefing
- Findings are sent to the requesting doctor in writing as soon as possible.
Radiopharmaceutical used: Tc-99m DTPA
