UNIVERSITY CLINIC FOR RADIOLOGY AND NUCLEAR MEDICINE

I have an MRI appointment. What do I need to consider?

Dear patient,

You have been registered by your outpatient clinic for an MRI examination. With this information sheet we would like to provide you with some important information about this examination. Should you receive a special MRI examination that requires specific preparation, you will be informed about this in an additional information sheet.

What is MRI?

  • MRI, or magnetic resonance imaging, is an imaging procedure that can produce cross-sectional images of your body using a strong magnetic field and radio waves.
  • With this highly modern examination, many medical questions can be answered reliably.
  • No X-rays are used and MRI is completely harmless if the safety regulations are observed.

.

The following important points should be considered in advance:

Do you carry any of the following medical items in your body?

  • Pacemaker / Defibrillator
  • Artificial heart valve
  • Ventriculo-peritoneal shunt (VP shunt)
  • Vascular clips and stents
  • Cochlear implant (inner ear implant)
  • Neurostimulator
  • Insulin pump / medication pump / glucose sensor

  • Have you had a fatal shrapnel or gunshot injury?
  • Do you suffer from kidney disease or kidney dysfunction?
  • Are you aware of a contrast medium allergy?

►      If you answer "yes" to at least one question, please consult your general practitioner to ensure that you are allowed to undergo an MRI examination. Please have your implant passport ready.

Prostata-MRT

  • Do not ride a bicycle 3 days before the examination
  • No sexual activity 3 days before the examination
  • Drinking non-carbonated beverages allowed
  • Emptying the urinary bladder before the examination (the examination takes about 1 hour)

Under certain circumstances, the administration of a contrast agent is necessary

  • If you are informed that a contrast medium will or could be necessary for you, please have your blood values determined by your general practitioner or your outpatient clinic at the earliest 14 days before your examination.
  • For the calculation of the quantity, your height and weight are required.

The following important points should be observed on the day of the examination:

  • Please plan enough time. If you arrive too late (e.g. due to personal reasons, traffic situation, parking, etc.) your appointment cannot be guaranteed. Additionally, please note that your exam will be in a clinic setting and may be rescheduled due to medical emergencies.
  • Bring your referral, health insurance card and, if applicable, implant passport with you

If you have already had an MRI examination of the affected body region in the past elsewhere than in our clinic, bring these images to the examination appointment in the form of a CD and have them read at the Radiology registration desk

The following important points should be noted immediately before the examination:

Before entering the examination room, you must remove the following items::

  • Metal objects (e.g. watches, jewelry, coinage, hair clips, glasses, etc.)
  • Wallet, purse
  • Data carriers (e.g. credit card, EC card, USB, etc.)
