What is the procedure for a computed tomography scan?

What is the procedure for a CT?

The examination protocol and the necessity of contrast medium administration are determined in advance by the responsible radiologist on the basis of the problem. After an explanatory talk about the possible risks, access is made to the arm if a contrast medium is to be administered. The patient is then positioned on the examination table, usually with the arms above the head, and the examination begins. Depending on the examination protocol, the patient is now passed through the CT scanner a few times and, if necessary, the contrast medium is given. During the administration of the contrast medium, a feeling of warmth to heat, sometimes also a metallic taste in the mouth, is frequently reported, but this subsides after a few moments. After about 5-10 minutes (cardiac examinations are sometimes somewhat longer), the examination is over.
