Expert telephone forum on 11 February 2025 on the topic: ‘Lung cancer - new treatment methods’
On Tuesday, 11 February 2025, you will have the opportunity to ask your questions on the topic of ‘Lung cancer - new treatment methods’ at the Volksstimme telephone forum. Two recognised experts will be on hand to answer your questions: Prof. Jens Schreiber, Director of the University Clinic for Pneumology in Magdeburg, and Prof. Thorsten Walles, Chief Physician of the Thoracic Surgery Department at the University Clinic for Cardiothoracic Surgery and Head of the Thoracic Surgery Clinic at the Lostau Lung Clinic.
After being diagnosed with lung cancer or bronchial carcinoma, patients often have many questions, which the two experts will answer and provide information on the latest developments in the field. Interested parties can call 0391-532970 from 10:00 to 12:00 to find out more about diagnosis, treatment and the latest developments in this specialist field.
Lung cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer in Germany and unfortunately one of the most serious. The main cause is still smoking, but inhaled dust, vapours and high levels of air pollution can also play a role.
A carcinoma of the lung often only becomes noticeable very late. This is why there will be early detection examinations in the near future. If a tumour in the lung is suspected, imaging examinations (X-ray, computer tomography) are carried out and the type of tumour is usually determined precisely using a tissue sample. In order to clarify whether metastases are present, i.e. whether the cancer has ‘spread’, a PET-CT of the whole body and an MRI scan of the head are now standard.
In recent years, there has been immense progress in understanding the molecular mechanisms and immunology of cancer, which has made new, often very effective therapies possible.
In order to successfully treat and, if possible, cure a tumour, there are various therapeutic approaches, such as surgery, radiotherapy, immunotherapy, molecular-targeted therapy, chemotherapy or a combination of these therapeutic options. There are other promising forms of therapy that are currently under development.
In the telephone forum, the experts will use the questions to show, among other things, what options are currently available in robotic surgery to remove lung carcinomas gently, effectively and in a targeted manner, but also how these therapies can be sensibly combined to achieve maximum benefit for patients.
A modern lung centre was opened at Magdeburg University Hospital in summer 2022. Here, the University Clinic for Pneumology and the Department of Thoracic Surgery of the University Clinic for Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery are pooling their expertise to cover university lung medicine at the highest level.
